S3 THOROUGHBRED MEETS WORKHORSE
The world championship-winning S3 is back — and even better than before. Combine proven S Series aero performance with the cutting-edge stiffness and lightweight design that comes from our Project California research facility, and you get what Ride Magazine has called “quite possibly The Perfect Bike.” The S3 is ready to put the hurt on a “friendly” Saturday morning ride, or just get you to the coffee shop a little faster. Stiffer, better-riding, aero as ever. All with zero weight penalty.
The S3 aero road bike teams category-leading stiffness and ride quality with an award-winning aero frame, with key features like Future-Proof Cable Routing and Partial Seat-tube Cutout.
Cervelo developed BBright to take advantage of the fact that oversized frame tubes are stiffer and lighter. On the right side, frame tubes are already as wide as possible; any wider and they’d hit the chainrings. But on the left side there are no chainrings, so BBright makes use of this extra space by extending the BB shell by 11 millimetres, nearly doubling the width of the left chainstay. At the same time, the drive-side dimensions of the frame are identical to BB30 and provide plenty of clearance for a wide range of cranks, including those with power meters.
Seatstays and chainstays are bonded into hollow dropouts, instead of the other way around. Bonding these precision-moulded surfaces reduces weight, and gives the internal rear derailleur cable a straight shot through the chainstay and dropout, eliminating bends and cable friction.
Improving aerodynamics requires an engineering approach that accounts for the entire system: Bike, rider and wheels. The Dropped Downtube places the leading edge of the tube closer to the trailing edge of the front tire, partly hiding it in the wake of the wheel.
A larger steerer diameter adds torsional stiffness with no weight penalty. A smaller steerer diameter is more compliant and can also be used to reduce headtube frontal area, and in turn, aerodynamic drag. How do we select which size to use? By defining performance goals — weight savings, aerodynamics, stiffness, ride quality and usability — at the start of the frame design process, Cervélo engineers choose the best steerer diameters/tapers to achieve those objectives.
Future-Proof Cable Management achieves compatibility across mechanical, electronic and hydraulic brake and derailleur systems. Future-Proof frames include interchangeable cable stops that snap into place and are easily swapped out by hand to accommodate upgrades. You can buy with confidence, knowing your bike is easily upgradable and can be enjoyed with the latest technology for years to come.
As with the Extended Seat Tube Cutout, the frame must fit closely to the tire, and the seat-tube cross section must have the right shape to help air flow smoothly across the seat-tube and around the wheel. Compared to the extended cutout, the partial version gives up a bit of aero to save a little weight.
The Reduced-Friction BB Guide maintains a consistent curve for each cable path by avoiding bends or kinks.
A completely redesigned chassis combines new, more robust airfoil sections with a rear triangle borrowed from our revolutionary Rca road frame. Our Dropped Downtube enhances frame stiffness while the flattened trailing edge makes bottles an integral part of the bike’s airfoil design. Overall improvements focus on all the perks you want in a workhorse of a bike: Future-Proof cables allow for easy set up of internal electronic, mechanical, or hydraulic shifting and braking lines. Increased clearance allows you to choose up to 700x25mm tires.
Incorporating the proven aero features that have made the S Series the pinnacle of aero road bicycle development, the S3 will make it feel like you’re cheating more than just the wind. From the Dropped Downtube to Shielding Seatstays, all frame shapes are designed to smooth airflow over the entire bike and rider as a system. Our Partial Seat-tube Cutout improves airflow around the rear wheel, while allowing for 700x25c tire clearance.
A reward for every pedal stroke: BBright boosts bottom bracket stiffness by 16% over the previous model, practically handing you a bunch sprint victory. Our Evolved Steerer Design boosts front-end stiffness (+23% from previous S3) for confident, responsive handling.
We’re more than happy to destroy the myth that aero bikes can’t be forgiving – even after a long day on less-than-perfect tarmac. Borrowing from the Rca’s rear triangle design, thinner seat stays offer class-leading comfort and compliance.
Designed to move from your training ride to the local circuit, two 11-speed builds (Ultegra and Ultegra Di2) with Mavic Cosmic Elite Wheels and a Shimano Ultegra crank, the S3 offers versatility and dependable performance, even under your peak output.
