Product Description

Checkpoint SL 5 is a carbon gravel bike made for epic all-road adventures. It's built with a full Shimano 105 drivetrain and hydraulic disc brakes, but the defining feature of this model is the lightweight OCLV Carbon frame with IsoSpeed, a decoupler at the top tube/seat tube junction that provides additional compliance over rough terrain so you can stay stronger longer.

It's right for you if...

Chamois or cut-off shorts, bikepacking trip or brutal day of gravel racing—you're going to ride far, go fast, and have a great time. You'd rather spend your money on a lightweight carbon frame than a top-of-the-line drivetrain, but you still expect your workhorse gravel bike to perform. You want a bike that's both fast and comfortable, and you want endless carry options for gravel races and everyday adventures.

The tech you get

A 500 Series OCLV Carbon frame with Rear IsoSpeed, powerful flat mount hydraulic disc brakes, a full 2x11 Shimano 105 groupset, and 700x35 Schwalbe TL-EX G-One Tubeless Ready gravel tires. Checkpoint SL 5 also has Control Freak internal cable routing, an alloy seatmast cap, Carbon Armor to protect your frame against debris, 12mm thru axles, and Stranglehold dropouts that make it easy to fine-tune your geometry or run singlespeed.

The final word

Light, fast, comfortable. Checkpoint SL 5 is a carbon gravel bike that nails this trifecta. A quality groupset, massive tire clearance, options for carrying gear, an OCLV Carbon frame with IsoSpeed, and a ride quality that can't be matched.

500 Series OCLV

Why OCLV Carbon? A well-built carbon frame dramatically reduces weight compared to metallic materials, while maintaining the strength and stiffness that high performance bicycles and their riders demand. This is where Trek’s pioneered and patented OCLV Carbon—an acronym for Optimum Compaction Low Void—process comes in. OCLV Carbon frames begin with the best material available. Trek has spent countless development hours perfecting the construction of a variety of weights and types of carbon (cloth, unidirectional, etc.). The OCLV process is best explained when broken down into two parts:

Optimum Compaction: Carbon is layered into a series of plies compacted to the ideal fiber-resin ratio. The process starts with cutting carbon fiber from large sheets to a specific shape which is then placed into a mold. A combination of heat and pressure then compresses the sheets of carbon into a carbon lug. This combination of heat and pressure is OCLV’s most essential and closely guarded equation.

Low Void: Voids are the spaces that exist between the layers of carbon fiber that comprise a component or frame. Minimizing these voids is the primary goal of quality carbon engineering, as more voids translates to reduced strength and durability of the composite material. OCLV Carbon exceeds aerospace standards regarding the number of voids in its material.

IsoSpeed Decoupler

Forgiving Ride, Relentless Performance. Since the invention of the traditional diamond-shaped bicycle frame over 100 years ago, a single fundamental challenge has remained: how to make a bicycle frame stiff enough to be efficient and handle predictably, yet compliant enough to reduce the jarring and fatiguing effects of a rough road.

Dozens—possibly hundreds—of ideas to solving the stiffness vs. compliance tradeoff have been tried and tested with various results, including numerous vibration damping materials and suspension systems. But for all the attempts, noble though they may have been, no options were both effective and efficient to the more discerning tastes of experienced riders. Until 2012. Until IsoSpeed.

IsoSpeed challenges the traditional design of a bicycle frame. Devoid of the more favored approaches to the compliance quandary (such as suspension systems, elastomers, or a vibration damper), IsoSpeed maintains the diamond-shaped frameset geometry but “decouples" the seat tube from the top tube, allowing the seat tube to flex with the forces of the road. The result is a bike that moves with the road while maintaining the feel and efficiency of the traditional race bike design.

Flat Mount disc brakes

All-new Flat Mount disc brakes are more elegant, lighter, smaller and cleaner than traditional disc brakes, providing superior performance and stopping power under harsh conditions.

 Ride Tuned seatmast

Our no-cut Ride Tuned seatmast is designed for the rigors of pro racing.  It's the lightest, most comfortable solution for day-in, day-out performance and comfort, however rough the roads or hard the riding.

Carbon Armor

Sometimes you need a little extra protection, so we developed our light, tough external Carbon Armor polymer shield,. It provided reassurance when you know your down tube is bound to take some abuse.

Stranglehold dropout

Horizontal sliding dropout with redundant securing mechanisms allows for no-slip singlespeed or geared options and provides the ability to dial in the geometry to match each rider's style.

12mm Thru-Axle

A 12mm front thru axle makes steering more precise for more control and the quick-release feature makes wheel removal easy.

Tubeless Ready rims

Bontrager Tubeless Ready (TLR) Road is the first fully integrated tubeless system for the road. No tubes mean there's no pinch flats, allowing you to run lower tire pressure. With lower tire pressure you can increase traction, control, and comfort to reduce your fatigue. Best of all, the tire sealant seals punctures as soon as they happen!

Blendr-compatible stem

Bontrager Blendr stem technology lets you clip your gear directly to the stem for cleaner looks and maximum user-friendliness.
